Buyi people have different rich and colorful houses, includes slate houses, thatched houses and so on. The slate houses are most distinctive. In Guizhou, slate houses can be roughly concentrated in two areas: one is the suburbs around Guiyang; the other is several counties in the Anshun area.
The Buyi villages are mostly surrounded by mountain and are near river. The surrounding environment is beautiful with ancient trees and streams. The village uses the height difference of the terrain, chooses the homestead and builds on the mountain, and takes advantage of the vertical combination of the mountains. The orientation of the building is also in line with the changes in the terrain, the flat is flexible and adaptable, and combined with the surrounding natural environment, reflecting the style of the mountain building.
The slate house construction is mostly two-storey. The lower layer raises livestock pigs, cattle, etc,and the upper floor normally provide to people. The floors and walls of slate house are paved with slate. Stone benches, stone jars, stone sarcophagi, stone mills, and stone stoves show the original indigenous cultural characteristics. The color of the stone shows white, blue ash, light earth red and other hue in the gray tone. Although the exterior of the Buyi dwellings seems to be built of stone, its real structural part is supported by wooden structures.
